My name is Martyn Shrewsbury and I am the Disability officer for Brecon and Radnor CLP. I am also Branch secretary of Ystradgynlais Labour party and an execute member of Disability Labour. I work as a psychotherapist and philosophy tutor and I am registered as partially sighted with the RNIB.
I represent and support people in tribunals with the DWP and in particular I concentrate on enabling those with disability to both empower and explain how they can stand up for their own rights and how to navigate the horror of the DWP in all its terrible forms. My proudest moment this year comes from supporting a suspended member of the Labour party regain full membership. The problem lay not with the member but with the Welsh Labour party who did not understand the perceptions and challenges faced by those with an autistic diagnosis.
I train and explain to party members, councillors and elected representatives how to support those facing the challenges of disability in this Tory Brexit island and how the representatives can challenge their own prejudices and understand the difference between seen and hidden disabilities.
