Nico Pollen for DL Exec Committee
I am a retired mental health worker, psychotherapist and dramatherapist. I have worked with people with learning disabilities ,asylum severs, victims of torture and homeless people.
As a member of the Patient and Public Involvement Forum for for a Mental Health Trust, I have been involved in policy making.
I am currently volunteering with a therapeutic music making project for people with a wide range of disabilities.
I have struggled with depression for most of my adult life, and have recently been affected by hearing loss. I have recent personal experience of the failure of the mental health system to provide crisis care. I care for a partner with disabilities.
Through my work, and personal experience, I have become painfully aware of the limitations of the health, social care and benefits systems, especially, but not exclusively, for people with mental health issues, learning disabilities, and long term illness or disability.
Since joining the DL Exec I have helped represent DL at Labour Party conferences and become a Mental Health First Aider.
I have also liaised with local Learning Disability groups, and explored the possibility of connecting with Deaf and Hearing impaired communities.
I am very keen to continue working with DL as an Exec member.
